Boredom Is A Medical Emergency

“Boredom is a medical emergency” is a quote from Dr. Patch Adams, who is his own specialty.  He does a show called “The Magic Elixirs of Life”, which include: Community, Good Food, Hobbies, Wonder and Awe, Love, Exercise, Art and Music, Right Livelihood, Spirituality, (and perhaps you can add a few).  I estimate at least 1/5 of what I hear from people suffering in the office is psyche related, and about ½ or more is strongly psyche affected.  It seems evident to me that mind and body are connected, and there’s no shame to it.

What are your favorites ways to cure boredom?

And what of the youth, so full of energy and potential?  I hope each one will find her/his interests, calling, inspiration, and true love.  Cheers for the hardworking athletic coaches, and teachers, dancers and martial artists; cheers for the mentors, campers/hikers/ bikers/skaters, and all other manner of athletic and artistic expression, (please add your favorites to the list.)  Here’s to our skate park in Laytonville.  And while we’re at it, let’s raise money for a heated swimming pool.  We’re going to need it as the population ages, for the elders and the youngsters.

Helping others is a well-known cure for boredom and loneliness.  Appreciation of nature is time well spent.  (“The time spent fishing is not subtracted from one’s life,” according to a wise saying.)  Perhaps tending a garden tickles your thumb.  I sometimes take a 10x power hand lens and explore the world a little closer.  Check it out; you never need be bored again.  There are free books on CD for the sight impaired or illiterate, assistive devices for the alter-abled, community college classes (sometimes right here in Laytonville.)   Gift making is a double boon.  The internet has opened the world to your own desk/lap/palm.  Quieting the mind, and returning to the present is a skill worth practicing.

What are your favorites?

P.S.  I’m collecting medicine songs and stories.  Hope you’ll share your favorites with me.
